October 2024: a city, listed by what helped.

This entry is preserved as it was written in October 2024, in the first weeks after Hurricane Helene, when this journal briefly became a bulletin board. The phone numbers and addresses have long since done their work; the record stays because the month should not be forgotten.

We wrote then: Asheville has been ravaged. Thousands displaced, lives lost, and a city rebuilding hand in hand. Shelters stood open at the WNC Agricultural Center and AB Tech; food and water moved through Pack Square Park and the neighborhood schools; FEMA teams took applications on folding tables from Black Mountain to Emma.

The sanctuary's part was bodywork: free sessions for the first responders, half price for a grieving city, because touch was what we had to give. That effort became the Community Care Project, which never ended.

What the list could not capture was the spirit: neighbors verifying rumors for each other, radio stations reading updates aloud, a chamber of commerce turned loan office, a city refusing to be the sum of its damage.

Together, we said, we will rise. Two years on, that is simply what happened, and keeps happening.
